CBT is based on the Cognitive Model of Emotional Response.
You can change the way you think, feel, and behave- even if the situation does not change.
CBT is Time-Limited
Cognitive-behavioral therapy is brief- usually sixteen sessions. Results may been seen after just a few weeks.
CBT is a collaborative effort between the therapist and the client.
We work together to outline your goals, and develop a plan to acheive them. CBT teaches the benefits of feeling calm when confronted with tough situations. It emphasizes that you choose whether or not to get upset about problems. When you get upset about your problems, you have two problems -- 1) the problem, and 2) the anxiety. CBT cuts this in half, leaving you the resources to deal with your problems instead of feeling overwhelmed.
CBT is structured
Sessions focus on how. It's problem oriented therapy and it works. As you learn what your particular automatic responses are, your symptoms improve. As you choose better behavioral options, you feel better.
CBT forces you to Challenge Assumptions
There is an old adage about assumptions, and we all know what happens "when you assume..." CBT will help you challenge your assumptions and you will learn that many of them are untrue and are contributing to your illness.
Homework is a central feature of CBT
It is not for everyone- some people feel like their feelings take a backseat to the work at hand. If you want to explore your feelings and relationships, Dynamics Based Psychotherapies such as ISTDP may be more satisfying. If you are interested in changing your life and gaining insights into yourself, a combination of supportive and insight-oriented psychotherapies may be ideal.
